He gets an unexpected visit from Val, who grants him the power to solve his puzzle and kill the monsters who massacred his family, though she never explains why or what it will cost.
Max Diaz, a seasoned LAPD detective, knows in her bones that Gilford Baker is a vengeance killer, that he took the law into his own hands and murdered the men who took his family. She sets out to prove it, pulling on threads that lead from one chaotic scene of violence to the next and finds herself a pawn in an ancient war between godlike beings who play chess at a universal scale, using the fabric of reality as their board.
Valerie Audrun, Gil’s friend and business partner, is more than a patent attorney, so much more. She is one of the immortal sisters, irresistibly powerful creatures that were breathed into life at the dawn of everything. Val was once their leader, but committed an unspeakable sin more than a millenia ago and now stands at odds with her sisters, fighting an impossible war with literally everything at stake.
